Perspectives from the Dean of Students: Strengthening our institutional culture through student-centric engagements

Reiterating our commitment to Your Success

10 January 2025

To all senior and incoming students at the Central University Of Technology, Free State

The Dean of Students says,

“Access to learning is a key focus at CUT, and we recognise that issues like financial and academic exclusion remain significant challenges in higher education. These challenges require thoughtful and collaborative approaches to ensure that no unfair exclusions occur and that the university upholds its commitment to fairness and excellence.

During this time, it is understandable that many students may feel uncertain or frustrated. However, with the start of the current SRC’s term, there has been a renewed commitment to work together toward solutions that balance student needs with the institution’s sustainability.

As the custodian of student wellbeing, I want to take this opportunity to communicate directly with you, our students, to outline important updates and initiatives aimed at addressing these matters. I ask that you take note of the information shared below.”

Strengthening student representation and support

At CUT, we are proud to have well-established Student Representative Councils (SRCs) on both campuses. These councils are the legitimate voices of the student body, dedicated to representing your interests and addressing your concerns.

If you require assistance, we encourage you to visit the SRC offices on your campus. To make this process easier, we will soon publish an updated list of the current elected SRC members to ensure you can connect with the appropriate representatives.

The SRC works closely with the Office of the Dean of Students to address challenges collaboratively and effectively. As Dean, I am committed to rethinking strategies and solutions in partnership with the SRC and other university offices to better support you.

This protocol is essential to maintaining a respectful and productive environment throughout the year. By working together and following these processes, we can uphold the values and image of CUT while fostering a supportive and well-functioning campus community.

Prioritising your safety and security

As the academic year begins, it is important to remain vigilant about your safety and security. Unfortunately, this period often sees an increase in illegal activities by individuals attempting to exploit students.

Here are key safety tips to keep in mind:

  1. Only engage with individuals who officially represent CUT, such as members of the SRC or university security personnel – Verify representative.
  2. For guidance or support, visit designated university venues and offices. These services are provided free of charge. CUT will never ask for payment for assistance or information - Seek assistance safely.
  3. Avoid sharing personal information or engaging with strangers on or near campus - Stay alert.

To our returning students, let us work together to create a safe environment and protect the reputation of CUT. Remember, our security team is always available to provide updates and guidance on any safety-related matters.

Your safety is our priority – do not hesitate to reach out for help if needed.

2025 Registration Concessions

We understand that the registration process can bring challenges, and we are committed to addressing them fairly and transparently. Discussions around registration concessions, initiated in December 2024, are ongoing, and updates will be shared with students as these discussions are finalised.

Our priority is to ensure that no student faces unfair exclusion while also maintaining the sustainability of our institution. By working together, we aim to balance the needs of our students with the long-term goals of CUT.

Concluding remarks by the Dean of Students,

“As we begin this academic year, I encourage all students to foster a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect. The university remains committed to engaging constructively with student leaders, particularly during this crucial registration period. On behalf of the institution, I appeal for calm and cooperation as we work together to address challenges and ensure a smooth process for everyone involved.

To maintain accountability and transparency, I will conduct weekly check-ins with the SRC to track progress and address student concerns effectively. Let us all strive to uphold a culture of respect and unity, as these values are essential for preserving and enhancing the reputation of our university.

I invite all students to join us in creating a renewed institutional culture—one grounded in humanity, integrity, and mutual understanding. As we move forward, further updates will be shared to keep you informed about developments across the university. Together, let’s build a successful academic year ahead.”

“Remember that good leaders are those who rise beyond differences”
