CUT community mourns the passing of former Chancellor, Mosiuoa Patrick Lekota
The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) is deeply saddened by the passing of Mr Mosiuoa Patrick Lekota, who served as Chancellor of the University from 1997 to 2009.
Born on 13 August 1948 in Kroonstad, Mr. Lekota was a distinguished South African anti-apartheid activist and seasoned politician. A member of the African National Congress (ANC), he was imprisoned from 1985 alongside leaders including Nelson Mandela for his role in the struggle against apartheid. In 2008, he parted ways with the ANC and became a founding leader of the Congress of the People (COPE). He also served as Premier of the Free State from 1994 to 1996.
Mr. Lekota made a significant contribution to the growth and development of CUT during the formative years of South Africa’s democracy. His leadership and commitment to education helped shape the institution’s direction and inspired a new generation of graduates and academics across the Free State and beyond.
The Central University of Technology extends its heartfelt condolences to Mr. Lekota’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
