CUT Celebrates Sporting Excellence at Inaugural Sports Awards

CUT’s top athletes brought the energy and excellence to the 2025 Sports Awards! This incredible group showed what true dedication and sportsmanship look like. A proud and inspiring moment for the Sports Department and the entire university community.

The Central University of Technology (CUT) remains committed to nurturing well-rounded graduates who embody its ‘Thinking Beyond’ ethos. Sports at CUT not only pave the way for successful athletic careers but also play a vital role in promoting the holistic well-being of its students.

On 16 October 2025, the CUT Operational Sports Department hosted its first-ever Sports Awards, a landmark event celebrating the outstanding achievements of student-athletes across multiple sporting codes from October 2024 to September 2025.

From gold medals in athletics and international podium finishes in Boccia to national league triumphs in cheerleading and volleyball, CUT’s athletes have once again demonstrated that hard work, discipline, and passion lead to greatness. The evening honoured not only victories and accolades but also the journeys, commitment, and unwavering pursuit of excellence that define the university’s sporting spirit.

CUT proudly stands as a home of champions, a place where athletes are nurtured, celebrated, and empowered to reach their fullest potential. The university’s sporting legacy extends far beyond current students, with alumni who continue to shine on national and international stages. Icons such as Os du Randt, André Venter, and Zola Budd Pieterse began their sporting journeys at CUT before representing South Africa with distinction. Today, stars like Trevor Nyakane, Jasper Wiese, and Pite van Biljon continue to carry the CUT flag high in professional rugby and cricket arenas.

Through its commitment to excellence both on and off the field, CUT continues to shape champions in sport, in character, and in life.

Season Highlights:

  • The CUT Volleyball Club continued to demonstrate excellence and consistency at the national level, maintaining a Top 10 position in the country by finishing 7th at USSA in 2024 and 2025. The team has also qualified for the Zone VI Club Championship, placing the university among the volleyball elite of Southern Africa.

  • The Rugby team beat UCT (the current champions) in a spectacular home game! The Ixias participated in the Varsity Cup Rugby Competition and achieved a commendable 2nd position among top-performing rugby universities.

  • The Men’s Football Team qualified for the 2025 Varsity Football Competition, while the Netball Team qualified for the 2026 Varsity Netball Competition and won the Mangaung League.

As the university continues to advance its Vision 2030 agenda, initiatives like the CUT Sports Awards serve as a powerful reminder that excellence is multidimensional, thriving not only in classrooms but also on playing fields and within communities.

This celebration was more than just a ceremony; it was a testament to the vital role sport plays in shaping confident, well-rounded graduates who are ready to take on the world and make history along the way.

The awards honoured individuals and teams who not only achieved outstanding competitive success but also exemplified the core values of teamwork, resilience, and leadership.
