THENSA Irish delegation visits CUT to strengthen international research collaboration
The delegation also visited CUT’s flagship research entities, the Centre for Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing (CRPM) and the Product Development Technology Station (PDTS). Together, these centres have developed extensive expertise in creating customised, patient-specific medical solutions, including advanced surgical planning models, training guides, and assistive devices for a wide range of healthcare applications.
From 19-21 August 2026, the Technological Higher Education Network South Africa (THENSA) Irish delegation visited the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) to strengthen international research collaboration and explore opportunities for future partnerships between South African and Irish institutions.
The Irish delegation included Prof. Dr Kevin Moerman, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Galway; Ms Sophie O’Kelly, Research Funding Manager at the I-Form Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre; Prof. Dr Dónal Holland, Assistant Professor of Biomechanics in the School of Mechanical Engineering at University College Dublin (UCD); and Mr John Oliver, Centre Manager at the I-Form Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre.
During the three-day visit, the delegates engaged with CUT researchers and academics through discussions, presentations, and site visits focused on identifying opportunities for collaboration in advanced manufacturing, biomechanics, medical technologies, and innovation-driven research.

In her welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof. Pamela Dube, noted that South Africa's science, technology, and innovation agenda increasingly requires universities to move beyond research publications and demonstrate meaningful impact through innovation, skills development, and commercialisation.
“Such collaborations create valuable opportunities for students, researchers, innovators, and practitioners to work together, exchange knowledge, and learn from one another. Our ambition extends beyond collaboration; we seek to strengthen international research partnerships and translate research into practical solutions and applications that have a meaningful impact on society. By working together, we can ensure that research and innovation contribute to meaningful solutions that improve the lives of patients and communities.”
The visit concluded on a positive note, with both parties expressing a strong commitment to strengthening international partnerships, advancing research excellence, and exploring future collaborative projects that will drive innovation, support skills development, and contribute to meaningful socio-economic impact.
