Welkom Campus welcomes learners at the Open day

On 04 May 2019, Dr Gary Paul, acting Vice-Chancellor, Principal (third from right, second row), and Prof. Oupa Makola Welkom Campus Director (second row, middle) welcomed scores of learners from wide and far to explore and experience campus life, meet lecturers and make informed choices. They are flanked by Grade 12 learners from Lebogang High School who were excited to be at CUT Welkom Campus.

Each year, the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) open the doors of opportunity to thousands of high school learners from all walks of life to attend the Open Day. Open Day is an opportunity given to learners, teachers and parents to visit the university and experience Campus life, meet face to face with academics, gather career knowledge, explore all programmes offered and make informed choices about future careers.

When welcoming the learners, parents and teachers, the acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Dr Gary Paul said that the university life is an exciting experience and learners must count themselves blessed and privileged to be able to experience the atmosphere.

“Our aim is to give you information that will empower you to make the best possible decision regarding the field of study that you want to pursue, and I trust that today will be enlightening and that your experience will become real for you that you cannot wait to walk through the CUT gates as a student,” Dr Paul said.

He also highlighted that CUT as a University of Technology provides students with the skills that will empower them to become competent graduates who will contribute to the advancement of the economy.

“What we pride ourselves in as a University of Technology is that we prepare our students for work and for life. Our purpose is to work with you to create a path in your life that will enable you to become a citizen that can contribute to the advancement of the economy and your personal growth,” he said.

His advice to prospective students was a game plan to go by in order to succeed in life. He mentioned pillars of the game plan strategy: setting goals, working hard, never giving up, and becoming men and women of integrity.

“In order for you to be successful when you coming to university, you have to set goals for yourself because goals provide a road map because if you do not have that map, your life is as good as unplanned. Always work hard, anything that comes easy in life is worthless. Hard work doesn’t kill and there is no alternative for it. The third thing you need to remember as part of your game plan is to never give up. Giving up is not an option and must be completely excluded from your mind and vocabulary. Lastly, live every day of your life with integrity. Do not put a price tag to who you are or compromise your integrity. I want to see you growing in your careers and becoming men and women of integrity,” he concluded.
