CUT champions ethics and integrity as cornerstones of institutional culture

CUT FM presenter Keabetsoe “Keeks” Moloi, discussing the critical role of ethics and integrity in fostering a resilient institutional culture and strengthening governance.

The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT), through a collaborative initiative between the Ethics Unit and CUT FM, recently hosted an engaging interview session featuring Executive Director of Resources and Operations, Mr Setumo Llale.

The discussion highlighted the vital role of ethics and integrity in fostering a resilient institutional culture and strengthening governance. Emphasising that trust lies at the heart of any successful organisation, Mr Llale emphasised the shared responsibility of both staff and students in upholding ethical standards and promoting accountability across the university community.

He stated that, “Ethics is everyone’s responsibility. What holds any institution together is not just systems or policies, but trust. Ethics and integrity guide how decisions are made, how resources are used, and how we support one another. Fraud and misconduct affect us all, which is why we must stay vigilant, speak up, and do the right thing, even when no one is watching,” he said.

Mr Llale further emphasised the critical role of leadership in advancing the ethics agenda, noting that leaders are instrumental in setting the tone for institutional culture. “By consistently modelling accountability, honesty, and fairness, leaders foster an environment where ethical behaviour is not only expected but actively upheld and sustained.”

Reflecting on the initiative, Mr Wonga Mbijekana, Ethics Officer and Champion, noted that such engagements reinforce a shared commitment to integrity, accountability, and ethical conduct across the university community. He added, “I believe that visible leadership commitment sets the tone at the top. In initiatives such as these, leading by example helps raise ethical awareness, strengthen trust, and promote responsible conduct.”

At CUT, ethics is positioned as a strategic enabler of institutional credibility, accountability, and long-term sustainability. It is a shared commitment across the university community, where both students and staff actively contribute to building a culture of integrity grounded in vigilance, accountability, and the confidence to act when something is not right.
