CUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal Prof. Pamela Dube handed over the assistive devices to Ms Kojang Motloung, Diploma in Office Management and Technology graduate and Mr Bongani Mazendela, a third-year Office Management and Technology student. CUT is determined to provide an inclusive environment and support where all students can excel and achieve greatness.

It was a day filled with emotions and excitement for Kojang Magret Motloung as she not only obtained her qualification, but also received an assistive device that will enhance independence and participation in her daily academic activities.

The handover was in celebration of Neurodiversity Celebration Week, a worldwide initiative that challenges stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences. The celebration further aims to create awareness about neurodiversity to the university community, focusing on diverse neuro-differences and the talents of those in the neurodiverse community.

Prof. Dube added that the awareness also aims to transform how neurodivergent individuals are perceived and how they can be supported while creating a more inclusive and equitable culture that celebrate differences and empower every individual. “Over the years, support such as assistive devices have been given to students with disabilities through funding from private donors and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. Our role as a university is to provide learning facilities, support and unleash the skills and talents of our neurodivergent students.”

Ms Motloung hails from Petrus Steyn, a small farming town, North-East of Free State. She is the first-born of four children and the first to graduate in the family, leaving a good example for her younger siblings.

“This was an emotional day for me. I am grateful to CUT for all the support and for ensuring that students with disabilities are not left behind. This device will enhance my enhance independence and participation in my daily academic activities,” said Kojang.
