Faculty of Management Sciences Hosts the 2nd Annual HR Summit Focused on the Future of Work
Driving change, building connections, HR professionals united at the 2nd HR summit.
On 09 September 2025, the Faculty of Management Sciences hosted its second Human Resources Management Summit, themed “Shaping the Future of Work through Inclusive Leadership, Artificial Intelligence Integration, Employee Upskilling, and Well-being.”
In an era where the Human Resource landscape is rapidly evolving, the summit served as a dynamic platform bridging academic theory and industry practice. It provided students with an immersive experience into the realities of modern HR by bringing together aspiring professionals and seasoned experts to explore emerging trends, challenges, and innovations shaping the future of work.
In her address, Ms. Sylvia Seleka, Senior Talent Manager at Harmony Mining Group, passionately emphasised the critical role of HR professionals in transforming workplace culture and preparing employees for roles that may not yet exist. “HR is no longer a support function; it is a strategic driver of change. We are called to lead transformation, build resilient cultures, and prepare people for jobs that don’t even exist yet.”
Ms. Seleka addressed the importance of intentional inclusive leadership, advocating for bias-free hiring, inclusive policies, and environments where individuals feel safe and valued.
She highlighted the transformative potential of technology, particularly in industries such as mining, where innovation can enhance safety and operational efficiency. While recognising the power of artificial intelligence, she stressed the need for responsible use: “AI should never replace human potential; it should enhance it. The future of HR is not about people or technology; it is about people and technology working together. The future of work is human-led, tech-enabled, and purpose-driven.”
Seleka called for attention to the urgent need for upskilling, describing it as a priority rather than an option. “Organisations must keep pace with change by equipping their workforce with digital literacy, emotional intelligence, and adaptability. Let us be a generation that learns and leads with courage,” she concluded.
Following the keynote, a panel of HR experts discussed vital topics such as digitisation, emerging HR trends, performance management, reward systems, training and development, talent management, and labour relations. Their insights provided practical guidance, reinforcing the summit’s mission to prepare students for the realities of the modern workplace.
Participating companies included Harmony Gold Mining, Interstate Bus Line, Absa Bank, CPI, Nonkosi Creatives, Pepsico and South African Board for Peoples Practices(SABPP).
