CUT Hosts Seminar on Multidisciplinary Research

Professor Dipti Sahu, a distinguished academic from the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), delivering his keynote address.

The Central University of Technology (CUT) hosted a thought-provoking seminar on multidisciplinary research, bringing together scholars, researchers, and postgraduate students from diverse academic backgrounds. The event formed part of the CUT-NUST DSIT-NRF Africa University Twinning Program, a collaborative initiative aimed at fostering research excellence across the continent.

Professor Dipti Sahu, a distinguished academic from the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), highlighted the growing importance of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches in solving complex global challenges. He explained that while interdisciplinary research blends methods and insights across fields, multidisciplinary research brings together experts from different disciplines to tackle shared problems, each contributing their unique tools and perspectives.

“The most predominant research approaches today are multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary,” Prof. Sahu noted. “Interdisciplinary research integrates data, methodologies, and hypotheses from various disciplines to tackle issues that transcend the scope of a single field. Multidisciplinary research, on the other hand, brings together experts from different domains to solve a common problem, without necessarily merging their methods.”

He highlighted that multidisciplinary research fosters innovation by combining diverse perspectives and knowledge bases. “This approach often leads to novel combinations of ideas and breakthrough discoveries, offering deeper and more comprehensive solutions to real-world problems.”

Prof. Sahu also stressed the importance of collaboration, stating that multidisciplinary teams, comprising individuals from varied disciplines, create fertile ground for intellectual exchange and creative problem-solving.

Prof. Wendy Setlalentoa, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagement, presented the university’s perspective on multidisciplinary research. She reaffirmed CUT’s commitment to cultivating an inclusive and collaborative research environment.

“At CUT, we are dedicated to nurturing a culture of inclusivity and diversity within research teams. We also embrace differences in discipline, institutional affiliation, career stage, and gender, believing that such diversity enhances creativity and problem-solving capacity,” said Prof. Setlalentoa
