CUT continues to shape champions in sport, character, and in life

Prof. David Ngidi, DVC: Research Innovation and Engagement, handed over the award to Karla Victor, who scooped the newcomer of the year and sportswoman of the year award. She captained the South African U20 Netball team at the Youth Championship World Cup and led CUT Netball to victory in the USSA A2 League. She was part of the USSA team that qualified for Varsity Netball 2026 and represented the Mangaung Senior A side at the National Championships. Additionally, she played for the SA U21 Baby Proteas in the Jamaica Test Series and served as Vice-Captain during the World Youth Championships in Gibraltar.

The CUT Sports Department, led by Ms Shela Molekwa, hosted its inaugural sports awards on 16 October 2025, where numerous athletes from various sporting codes received excellence awards in recognition of their hard work, commitment, and discipline. The university proudly stands as a home of champions, a place where athletes are nurtured, celebrated, and empowered to reach their fullest potential.

In his congratulatory message, Dr Bernard Sebake, Dean of Students, emphasised the university’s commitment to excellence, describing it as one of their core values. He noted that sport not only builds character but also contributes to the economy. Sebake encouraged everyone to continue building momentum and cultivating talent that achieves at the highest level, adding that CUT is part of a vibrant and dynamic society.

Mbulelo Frans May, Cheerleading Male, was honoured with the Sportsman of the Year award in recognition of his outstanding achievement in representing South Africa at the World Championships. His dedication and performance at international level exemplify the spirit of excellence upheld by CUT. The award was presented by Prof. David Ngidi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning.

Prof. David Ngidi, DVC: Teaching and Learning, reflected on the deeper impact of sport, highlighting that it is more than just competition; it builds character, teamwork, and resilience. He congratulated all the athletes for demonstrating discipline and passion throughout the year, whether receiving awards or supporting from the sidelines. Ngidi reminded them that their journey does not end here and urged them to keep striving, assuring them of the university’s ongoing commitment to supporting their endeavours.

CUT Alumnus, Former Springbok and Cheetahs Rugby Player, and current Head of the Cheetahs Rugby Academy, Mr Oupa Mohoje, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to CUT for the opportunity he received through a sports bursary, which played a pivotal role in his academic and sporting journey. He congratulated all award recipients and encouraged them to remain hopeful and committed to their goals.

“When I received the opportunity, I grabbed it with both hands. Whenever an opportunity is presented before you, embrace it and turn it into gold. Congratulations to all of you, keep working hard and continue to raise the university flag high above the rest.”

Karabo Morapedi received the Sports Person with Disabilities Award. He achieved exceptional success in Boccia between October 2024 and September 2025. He won 1st place at the National Championships in Gqeberha and represented South Africa at the World Boccia Africa Regional Championships in Cairo. Competing as a pair with his partner Elanza, they secured 2nd and 3rd place respectively in the BC3 category and won all his matches at the Free State Boccia Trials. The award was presented by Mr Arthur Nkhabu, disability coach.

Martha Mosoahle received the Coach of the Year award in recognition of her exceptional leadership and coaching achievements. She led the CUT Netball team to qualify for Varsity Netball 2026, served as Head Coach of the Provincial Crinums in the Silver Telkom League, and coached the Fast 5 National Netball Team. She also holds the position of Head Coach of the Botswana National Netball Team, reflecting her influence both locally and internationally. The award was presented by Mr Qondakele Sompondo, Director: Institutional Advancement and Acting Director: Communications and Marketing.
