Seilatsatsi, the CUT Solar Car
Part of the Sustainable Energy Cluster.
Students and staff from the Central University of Technology, through the Smart City Centre (CSSC), played an hands-on role in the 2024 Sasol Solar Challenge by designing, developing, and building a fully functional solar-powered vehicle. Their participation placed them alongside both professional and amateur teams from around the world, with the shared goal of covering the greatest possible distance powered solely by the sun.
The Seilatsatsi, the CUT solar team in the Sustainable Energy Cluster in CSSC engaged in the complete engineering cycle—from conceptual design and advanced aerodynamic modelling to mechanical construction, solar integration, and testing. The project provided a real-world platform for students to apply their knowledge in mechanical, electrical, and renewable energy systems, while also fostering innovation, teamwork, and problem-solving under real race conditions.

Beyond the technical challenge, Seilatsatsi, the CUT solar team in the Sustainable Energy Cluster in CSSC team contributed to the event’s Schools Programme by engaging school learners at various Control Stop towns. Staff and students facilitated STEM-focused activations, introducing learners to solar technology, robotics, and sustainability through practical demonstrations and interactive stations.
This dual involvement—both in competition and outreach—demonstrates CSSC’s commitment to advancing sustainable technologies and inspiring the next generation of engineers and innovators across South Africa.
