More Information

The PGCE (Senior Phase and FET) trains student teachers to teach one subject in the Senior Phase (Grade 7-9) and one in the FET Phase (Grade 10-12).

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) informed universities that 3-year, 360 credit university diplomas not on the approved list in the 2015 MRTEQ document will no longer be considered for admission into PGCE. Only diplomas as mentioned explicitly in this MRTEQ (Gov Gaz no: 38487), can be considered. These diplomas are in the fields of:
  • Engineering
  • Tourism
  • Hospitality
  • Agriculture
  • Fine Art
  • Dance
  • Music
  • Dramatic Art
  • Business Studies
  • Accounting
  • Design
  • Engineering Graphics and Design
  • Medical Technology
  • Chemical Technology
  • Information Technology
  • Biotechnology
  • Sport and Exercise Technology
  • Applied Sciences
  • Mathematics Technology

The following CUT diplomas cannot be used as entry into PGCE from 2022:
  • Diploma in Marketing Management
  • Diploma in Office Management and Technology
  • Diploma in Human Resource Management
  • Diploma in Financial Information Systems
  • Diploma In Language Practice and Media Studies

Any other similar 3-year university diplomas not on the MRTEQ list cannot be considered for PGCE.

Students are requested not to apply if they do not qualify.

CUT does not offer methodologies for certain subjects. If a student majored in any of these fields, CUT would not be able to admit such a student into PGCE:

Senior Phase

  • Arts and Culture (only offered on Bloemfontein Campus)
  • Social Sciences
  • Life Orientation
  • Afrikaans
  • English
  • Sesotho
  • isiXhosa

FET Phase

  • History
  • Geography
  • Afrikaans
  • English
  • Sesotho
  • isiXhosa
  • Life Orientation

The following PGCE methodologies are only offered on the Bloemfontein Campus:

  • Agricultural Sciences
  • Mathematics (FET Phase)
  • Electrical Technology
  • Mechanical Technology
  • Civil Technology
  • Consumer Studies
  • Engineering Graphics and Design
  • Hospitality Studies (subject to the publication of the amended policy document, under review)
  • Tourism (subject to the publication of the amended policy document, under review)
  • Visual Art

To qualify for a FET methodology, the student must have completed the corresponding subject module up to 3rd-year level (i.e., Methodology Economics needs Economics 3). If a student has not completed a 3rd year level of such a module, the student can complete it simultaneously with PGCE as a Non-degree purposes (NDP) module.

To qualify for a Senior Phase methodology, the student must have passed a similar module at 2nd-year level, or if a combination of modules is needed for a methodology (i.e., Economics, Business Studies and Accounting are needed for Methodology Economic Management Sciences) at least two of these subjects should be at 2nd-year level. A student can register for an NDP module simultaneously with PGCE to reach the next year’s level.

Qualifying for PGCE does not necessarily mean a student will be admitted to PGCE. The university receives numerous applications for PGCE (both campuses). The academic performance of students in the relevant subjects of the 1st university qualification is taken into consideration when admission into PGCE is made.

In addition, certain methodologies can only be offered if enough applications for such a methodology have been received. Also, if the university is able to provide such students with resources to successfully complete that module (human and physical).

Students from outside universities should ensure that they submit all the necessary documents with their online application. If academic records (statement of results) of the previous university qualification are not received, no admission can be considered. Correct e-mail addresses and phone numbers should also be provided.

Once the student has applied, the outcome of the application should be checked regularly. The status of the application will first indicate that the application has been received and is being attended to. However, the status must change to No Decision Taken, otherwise the application has not yet been captured by the enrollment section and such an application is not visible to the faculty. If, after a period (one month), the status has not yet changed, the Enrolment section at the applied for campus should be contacted. Keep in mind that hundreds of applications are received, and the Enrollment Unit will do its utmost to capture applications as soon as possible.

Career Opportunities

Teacher or lecturer at a secondary school or FET college.

Purpose

The PGCE (Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching) is a professional education qualification, and focuses on developing competencies that the student can apply as a subject teacher in the Senior Phase and the Further Education and Training Phase. The qualification requires a specific depth and specialisation of knowledge, together with practical skills and school-based learning, to enable successful students to apply their learning as beginner teachers in schools in varying contexts. The qualification aims at the development of professional competence, reflexively grounded in educational theory. The PGCE (Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching) is an entry-level, initial professional teaching programme that ‘caps’ an undergraduate degree or an approved diploma.
