Bridging theory and practice: Somatology students host Market Day to showcase their products

Proudly presenting their creations, CUT Somatology students showcase their products at the Market Day.

The Somatology department recently hosted a small-scale Market Day presented by third-year students, providing them with an opportunity to develop and market a range of products made from natural ingredients while offering treatments and engaging directly with clients. Products showcased included body oils, massage oils, hand lotions, scrubs, scented candles, and mist diffusers.

The initiative forms part of the institution’s Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) strategy, which is aimed at bridging the gap between theory and practice by equipping students with both academic knowledge and practical competencies. By simulating a real-world Somatology business environment, the Market Day offers students valuable entrepreneurial experience within a structured and supportive learning context.

Turning natural ingredients into beautifully packaged products, proudly crafted by third-year Somatology students.

The Market Day is guided by clearly defined learning outcomes that contribute to the development of work-ready graduates. These include the application of business and entrepreneurial principles, effective client communication, and the maintenance of high standards of professionalism and customer care. Students also strengthened their marketing competencies and gained valuable experience in brand positioning and client engagement.

Furthermore, the initiative promoted community engagement by inviting members of the community to participate as clients, creating a mutually beneficial experience for both students and the broader community. The event not only fosters innovation and creativity among students but also strengthens industry-relevant skills that are essential for success in the Somatology and wellness sector.
