CUT’s Department of Business Management hosted a Prestige Marketing Symposium, which saw third-year students engage in robust debates, a crucial initiative for enhancing students' academic and professional development.
“In an increasingly globalised world, marketing professionals are required not only to understand complex theories but also to communicate their ideas persuasively, engage in critical discussions, and navigate diverse perspectives. This initiative provides students with a platform to develop these essential skills in a structured and challenging environment,” said Mr Cassius Coetzee, CUT Lecturer: Business Management.
Coetzee added that debating encourages active learning, moving beyond passive absorption of content to the practical application of knowledge. “It allows students to tackle real-world marketing problems, analyse different viewpoints, and defend their positions with well-reasoned arguments. This approach also sharpens their ability to think on their feet, an invaluable skill in high-pressure marketing situations. Furthermore, the debating format builds confidence in public speaking, an important competency for marketers who often need to present to stakeholders, clients, and colleagues,” he stated.
The first debate topic was: ‘The integration of AI in academia enhances educational outcomes and research capabilities’ and was won by the Titans who were against the motion. The second debate was: ‘Increasing the representation of women in academia is essential for the advancement of education and research’ and was won by the Terminators and The Core Four team who were against the motion.

The Prestige Marketing Symposium, supported by Inemuri, also adds an element of prestige and recognition, motivating students to excel. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of preparing students for leadership roles by fostering their communication, critical thinking, and teamwork abilities; essential traits that are encouraged by the CUT Business Management department.
