Meet CUT's Prof. Alfred Modise, a renowned scholar and community leader who believes that giving back to the community is not just a duty but a privilege

Meet Prof. Alfred Motalenyane Modise, a renowned scholar, community leader, and role model, who rose from humble beginnings to become an Associate Professor at the Central University of Technology, Free State.
His early years were marked by limited resources, but his determination to succeed propelled him forward. “I have always believed that education is the key to transforming not only individual lives but the entire community. I was supported by the Methodist church of Southern Africa NGO (Sedimosang Education Project) under the supervision of Mr Billy Ramhlele to further my studies.”
Prof. Modise has worn many hats. From his early career as a teacher at Emang Mmogo Secondary School in Kimberly (1996-2001), Head of Department of Commerce at Senakangwedi Secondary Schools in Botshabelo (2001-2010) and Deputy Principal at Sediti Secondary School in Thaba Nchu (2010-2012).
In 2018, he was appointed as the Accounting, Economics and Business studies lecturer at CUT Welkom Campus, Department Manager, acting Dean: Teaching (2021), acting Assistant Dean: Teaching and Learning and Assistant Dean Research Innovation and Engagement in the Faculty of Humanities. He has consistently demonstrated a commitment to academic excellence and community engagement. His progression within academia is marked by a University Diploma in Commerce at Thaba Nchu College of Education. ACE: school leaderships from the University Free State, BTech in Commerce, master’s in education, and, ultimately, a Doctorate in Education from CUT.
Reflecting on his academic journey, he notes, ‘‘Achieving my Doctorate in Education in 2018 and being promoted to Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in 2024 are milestones that I hold dear to my heart. They represent the culmination of years of hard work and dedication towards enhancing the field of education.”
He participated in the first World Cup hosted by South Africa in African as VIP and VVIP Protocol. As an expert in accounting, he was appointed by the former Bishop Rev/Dr Mvume Dandala of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa as the District Coordinator of Millennium campaign Resources Fund of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa and Facilitator in Southern Africa. He is also the Vice-President of the Southern African Society for Education (SASE).
His faith carried him through his studies, supported by the Kagisho Trust and Sedimosang Education Trust, which introduced him to political activism under the guidance of Mr Billy Ramahlele. He continued his studies in education, specialising in commercial subjects, and completed his University Diploma in Education at the Thaba ‘Nchu College. His commitment to community engagement has made a positive contribution to the community and extends beyond his professional responsibilities. “Giving back to the community is not just a duty but a privilege,” he said.
He remains active in community education initiatives, particularly those aimed at assisting matric learners with accounting and other commercial subjects. He emphasises values such as respect, empathy and collaboration. His approach to education is deeply rooted in the belief that everyone deserves a fair chance to succeed, regardless of their background. His teaching philosophy is centred around creating inclusive learning spaces, empowering learners and students to believe in their potential, and supporting them in overcoming challenges.
His future aspirations include continuing his work in mentoring young academics and fostering the growth of future leaders. Prof. Modise’s story is one of perseverance, a commitment to social justice, and an unwavering dedication to education. Through his achievements and community work, he exemplifies the belief that, regardless of one’s starting point, hard work and determination can lead to transformative success.
His research interests include accounting education, curriculum, pre-service teachers’ development, pedagogical content knowledge of Economic and Management Sciences. He has proven himself as a scholar by presenting papers in the national, international conferences etc. He published papers in different Journals supervised master’s and PhD students and currently published chapters in a book” Financial literacy for the 21 Century: An Accounting and personal perspective.
