The classic question, “Why must we do mathematics?” prompted more than the usual response about acquiring tools and skills for problem-solving, whether in the classroom or the real world. Instead, it sparked the introduction of a real-world, problem-solving assignment embedded within the Engineering Mathematics III curriculum at the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT). This assignment challenged students to move beyond simply solving for "x" in a textbook and instead tackle a real-world "x." It emphasised that effective problem-solving demands a diverse set of tools, skills, guidance, and a touch of innovation. The richer the basket of resources, the more complex and meaningful the problems students can solve.

Since 2019, over 1,000 mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering students have actively engaged in addressing real-world challenges by developing innovative solutions and navigating the full process of bringing products to market. This achievement has been made possible through the invaluable support of the Idea Generator Unit (iGym), which empowers students by providing essential tools, mentorship, and guidance to transform ideas into tangible outcomes.

This success is a result of a collaborative effort bridging academia with key CUT support units, including the Idea Generator (iGym) within the Innovation and Technology Transfer Office (ITTO), Product Development and Technology Station (PDTS); the Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab); the Civil Engineering Laboratory (CiviLab); the Disability Unit; and the Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences in the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment, and Information Technology.

The university’s approach of combining theory with practical skills through innovation hubs is a great way to prepare students for the workforce. These hubs offer free training in a variety of in-demand skills such as Computer Aided Design (CAD), 3D printing, cement construction, brick making, welding, costing of manufacturing a prototype, entrepreneurship and sign language.

“The collaboration between the Mathematics Department and the Idea Generator Unit has helped students understand the real purpose behind solving for 'x'. Beyond applying problem-solving skills to real-world scenarios, integrating innovation into the engineering syllabus serves a crucial role. At universities of technology like CUT, the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) mandates that engineering students develop Graduate Attributes, with Problem Solving being at the top of the list,” said Dr. Michelle Erasmus.

Dr. Izabeth Conradie, Idea Generator (iGym) Manager, shared an exciting vision for the future. She highlighted that collaborations such as this one indicate a bright future for innovation and entrepreneurship at CUT. “With a vibrant on-campus marketplace where student innovation meets real-world demand, the future is indeed promising and full of potential, inspiring all involved to continue their efforts,” she said.
