CUT signs a MoU with Mphona Civils to facilitate the development of a Smart City Project in Matlosana (formerly Klerksdorp)

Mr Lot Mahlangu, Executive Manager: Mphona Civils (Pty) Ltd, Mr Thabo Johnson, Chairperson and CEO of Mphona, and Prof Alfred Ngowi, Deputy Vice- Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagement and Prof. Albert Strydom, Dean of Management Sciences.


On 02 December 2024, the Central University of Technology signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mphona Civils (Pty) Ltd to facilitate the development of the Matlosana Smart City Project.

The collaboration is envisioned to contribute towards the development of a smart city through various disciplines including information technology, science, digital solutions, and other innovative techniques to solve municipal urban challenges such as energy, transportation, food security, and inequality.

Prof. Alfred Ngowi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagement expressed his excitement about the partnership. “We are proud to contribute our expertise and resources as the project will also provide the institution with community centered solutions. This partnership aligns perfectly with our mission to be at the fore front on the 4th Industrial Revolution technologies, ensuring that we are not only building Smart Cities but creating opportunities for economic growth and job creation.”

He stated that the university will be providing a wealth of knowledge, research capabilities, committed education and economic development, while Mphona Civils will contribute its existing experience and construction management towards the success of the project.

The collaboration will create opportunities, foster innovation and build a city that reflects the aspiration of its people. “We’re embarking on this journey to transform the lives of the people of Matlosana and beyond. This collaboration signifies a committed relationship that will harness our strength, combined expertise and resources to make this project a success,” said Prof. Alfred Ngowi.

The partnership will provide CUT students with practical work experience and opportunities at Mphona Civils. Mphona will also engage with students and faculties through internships, joint workshops, and knowledge exchange to enhance skills and foster a talent pipeline for the company.

Mr Thabo Johnson, Chairperson and CEO of Mphona Civils (Pty) Ltd, said they are looking forward to kick-starting the project, which will optimize the city functions, promote economic growth and improve the quality of life of citizens using smart technologies and data analysis. “This project is in 285 hectors, estimated to accommodate 30 000 people with technology-driven houses. “I believe that we have formed the best beacon partnership with CUT as the university also focuses on innovation, sustainability and technology. This MoU is a testament of our shared commitment to driving economic growth, social development and environmental sustainability in our society,” he said.

He added that Mphona Civils (Pty) Ltd is a dynamic and visionary company driven by the goal of transforming South Africa’s societal infrastructure. “Our mission is to empower sustainable growth and comprehensive integrated development solutions and services. Our vision is to build inclusive, vibrant, and sustainable cities as prototypes for aspiring urban centers.
