The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) has received encouraging feedback from a recent accreditation review conducted by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), which recognised the quality, relevance and impact of engineering programmes offered. While the university awaits ECSA’s formal report, preliminary feedback highlighted several areas of excellence across Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering qualifications.

Conducted from 31 August to 1 September 2026, the accreditation assessed programme quality, academic standards, resources, student support, industry engagement and continuous improvement practices across the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology (FEBIT).

CUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof. Pamela Dube, provided the panel with institutional assurance of the university's commitment to producing highly skilled engineering graduates and maintaining professional standards.

Prof. Muthoni Masinde, Dean of FEBIT, noted that the positive feedback reflects an authentic culture of quality across the institution. “What was particularly affirming was that the strengths of the institution were visible not only in the evidence we submitted, but also in what the panel encountered across the university and heard directly from our students and industry partners. That speaks to a culture of quality that is lived every day. We are highly encouraged by the strengths recognised by the panel and will work systematically to address the areas identified for enhancement. Our goal remains to provide engineering education that prepares graduates to make meaningful contributions to South Africa and the profession.”

The review further carried international significance, with observers from the International Engineering Alliance (IEA) representing South Korea, the United Kingdom and Ireland accompanying the ECSA delegation, placing CUT’s engineering programmes within a broader global quality assurance context.

The positive outcome reinforces the university’s reputation as a leading provider of engineering education and reflects the university's ongoing commitment to academic excellence, industry relevance and student success.
