The Sustainable Smart Cities Research Centre focuses on producing transformative technologies, products, devices, structures, and methodologies that contribute towards the development of sustainable cities of the future. Our research explores and utilises the possibilities of the Industrial Revolutions, with particular emphasis on Industry 4.0 technologies.

Through our Multi-Inter and Transdisciplinary (MIT) Research platform, we prepare graduates for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the future world of work, while making significant contributions to National Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) initiatives.

Flagship Project: ITIKI Drought Prediction Tool

Addressing Africa's Number One Disaster

Droughts remain the number one disaster in Africa. The ITIKI (Integration of Indigenous and Scientific Knowledge for Drought Prediction) project addresses the critical challenge that smallholder farmers lack appropriate drought-forecasting tools, forcing them to rely solely on indigenous knowledge for critical cropping decisions.

Innovative Integration Approach

ITIKI is a unique drought forecasting service that integrates indigenous knowledge with scientific drought forecasting techniques. Mobile phones are utilized to deliver relevant, timely, and accurate forecasts directly to farmers.

Impact: Farmers in Kenya, Mozambique, and South Africa can now make informed cropping decisions that lead to improved crop yields and enhanced food security.
