Professional Background

The academic career at the Central University of Technology, Free State, has progressed through roles including Supplementary Instruction, Lecturer Assistant, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor, as well as Director of the Centre for Sustainable SMART Cities.

Academic qualifications include a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering (2002), Baccalaureus Technologiae in Electrical Engineering (2003), Magister Technologiae in Electrical Engineering (2006) and Doctor Technologiae in Electrical Engineering (2010), all obtained from CUT.

Postgraduate education studies completed during 2010-2011 included Assessment and Teaching / Facilitation, both passed with distinction. Further professional development has included workshops in education, presentation skills, re-curriculation, community engagement programme design, electrical power cables and photovoltaic solar systems.

Research experience spans a broad range of engineering and interdisciplinary fields. The supplied portfolio records 47 publications, including 17 accredited journal articles and 21 conference proceedings. It also records 193 citations, an h-index of 7 and an i10-index of 7.

Several doctoral and master's students have been successfully supervised. Academic service includes external examining of BTech Digital Signal Processing and master's and doctoral research at other universities, conference and programme committee work, and serving as the main chair of RobMech 2017.

Community engagement activities include initiating and leading a computer assembly training programme and receiving the Vice-Chancellor's Excellence Award for Community Engagement in 2010.

Industry experience includes consulting engineering work in PCB manufacturing, industrial product and systems development, and a sabbatical at Technische Hochschule Ulm.
