The Central University of Technology is committed to skills development and the advancement of black academics and researchers. Through strategic partnerships with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), Universities South Africa (USAf), and various Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), we offer prestigious, fully funded pathways for early-career and mid-career professionals to grow, research, and innovate at CUT.

CUT-Specific Academic Development Programmes

As a participating institution in critical national initiatives, CUT provides dedicated support, mentorship, and research funding to accelerate the careers of our academic staff.

DHET Funded

New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP)

The nGAP initiative is designed to develop a new generation of academics. It provides early-career lecturers with a structured pathway to complete their doctoral studies, coupled with dedicated research funding, mentorship, and a reduced teaching load to ensure their successful transition into permanent academic roles.

DHET Funded

Future Professors Programme

Aimed at mid-career academics, this prestigious programme supports the development and promotion of academics into professorial roles. It provides substantial research grants, international exposure, and intensive leadership and mentorship coaching to ensure our future professors are globally competitive and highly impactful.

Professional Internships and Research Fellowships

For recent graduates and established researchers, CUT offers practical workplace experience and advanced research opportunities through our strategic partnerships.

SETA-Funded Internships and Learnerships

In collaboration with various Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), CUT hosts structured internship and learnership programmes. These initiatives provide recent graduates with critical, funded workplace experience, professional mentorship, and a direct pathway into the competitive job market, while addressing the country's critical skills shortages.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

CUT offers highly competitive postdoctoral fellowship opportunities, often aligned with our NRF-rated researchers and SARChI Research Chairs. These fellowships provide emerging PhD graduates with the dedicated time, resources, and expert supervision required to publish high-impact research and establish their independent academic careers.

Empowering Your Research Journey Nationally

As a CUT researcher, you are also connected to powerful national networks and resources. Through our partnership with Universities South Africa (USAf) and the Department of Science Technology and Innovation (DTSI), you have access to the Advancing Early Career Researchers and Scholars (AECRS) programme, designed to provide vital support and capacity building for emerging academics across the South African higher education sector.
