Student Career Support Overview
Employability Resource Hub: Guided Search & Discovery
The world of work changes rapidly. Instead of relying on outdated guides, we have compiled a modern search glossary to help you find the most current, relevant, and free resources available on the internet today.
Copy and paste these search terms into a search engine such as Google, Edge, DuckDuckGo, YouTube, or LinkedIn to find up-to-date templates, tutorials, and strategies tailored for today's job market.
CVs and Cover Letters
Try searching these terms:
- "ATS-friendly CV template free"
- "How to write a CV with no work experience"
- "Professional cover letter examples for graduates South Africa"
- "Canva professional CV design"
Why this matters:
"ATS" stands for Applicant Tracking System. Many companies use software to scan CVs before a human sees them. Using a clean, simple format ensures the software can read your skills correctly.
Interview Preparation
Try searching these terms:
- "STAR method interview examples for students"
- "Common graduate interview questions and answers South Africa"
- "How to set up for a virtual video interview"
- "Professional attire for job interviews South Africa"
Why this matters:
The "STAR" method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) is the global standard for answering behavioural interview questions clearly and confidently.
Job Search Strategies
Try searching these terms:
- "How to access the hidden job market"
- "Graduate programmes and internships South Africa", + add the year
- "How to network on LinkedIn for university students"
Recommended Platforms:
Careers24, PNet, Graduate Recruitment Bureau (GRB), and the official LinkedIn "Jobs" tab. Always verify the legitimacy of the employer.
Workplace Readiness
Try searching these terms:
- "Professional email etiquette examples for work"
- "What to expect on your first day at a new job"
- "Understanding workplace psychometric tests"
- "CUT graduate attributes explained"
Why this matters:
Technical skills get you the interview, but "soft skills" (communication, reliability, teamwork) keep you the job. Understanding office etiquette builds immediate professional trust.
Entrepreneurship and Innovation
Try searching these terms:
- "Lean canvas business model template"
- "How to register a business in South Africa CIPC"
- "Design thinking problem-solving examples"
CUT Resource:
Visit the CUT i-Gym (Idea Generator) for on-campus support, mentorship, and resources tailored to student entrepreneurs.
External Tools and Support
Try searching these terms:
- "Student temporary employment programme CUT"
- "Work Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunities South Africa"
Pro Tip:
Adding "free" or "South Africa" to your search queries helps filter out paid, international content that may not apply to your local context or budget.
