The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) is deepening its commitment to advancing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education through a series of targeted initiatives that prepare learners for higher education and future careers.

In June 2025, CUT launched a transformative support programme at Albert Moroka High School in Thaba Nchu. Spearheaded by the Schools Advancement Academy and funded by BankSeta, the initiative provides intensive academic support in Mathematics and Physical Sciences to 50 Grade 12 learners. The programme, which includes additional learning materials, meals during class sessions, and transportation is designed to strengthen learners’ readiness for their final examinations, arguably the most critical milestone of their schooling journey,

The classes, held on weekends and selected school holidays, have been met with enthusiasm. Learners stated that the additional support has helped them grasp difficult concepts more effectively, with noticeable improvements reflected in their pre- and post-assessment results.

The BankSeta’s involvement goes beyond funding. Representatives from the SETA visited CUT on the 20th of August 2025, to assess the project’s progress and reaffirm their commitment to strengthening STEM pathways for young South Africans. During the visit, learners were also introduced to crucial information about financial aid opportunities to ensure that well performing learners do not encounter financial barriers. Through these efforts, CUT continues to position itself as a hub for nurturing the next generation of STEM professionals while contributing to improved educational outcomes in local communities. Stakeholders remain optimistic that this intervention will significantly boost the matric pass rate and inspire more learners to pursue careers in STEM fields.
