CUT officially opens doors for the 2020 academic year

The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) officially opened its doors at both campuses on 29 and 31 January 2020 respectively, to welcome students in the 2020 academic year. The opening proceeded smoothly despite the sporadic tension surrounding universities around the country. More than 4 300 first-year students were welcomed at the university, from a total of 48 253 applicants. This figure is in line with the Department of Higher Education, Science and Technology approved CUT Enrolment Plan. The university’s final total enrolment figure for 2020 has not yet been determined, given that late registrations have not yet closed, but the figure is likely to exceed 23 000 students, including first-year, returning undergraduate, and postgraduate students.

In his welcoming address, Prof. Henk de Jager, Vice-Chancellor and Principal applauded the first-year students for passing their matric and securing a spot at CUT, joining thousands of current students who have made CUT a home away from home. He also thanked them for choosing CUT as their intellectual home. “I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our university. Your arrival here marks an important chapter in your life, use this great opportunity to the best of your ability and never stop dreaming because each one of you has the potential to graduate and make a difference.”

He also spoke about the challenges that students are facing and assured them that at CUT, students’ safety, experience and success is a top priority. “Our students are at the centre of everything we do. We are aware that you are facing many challenges and as management. We do not want you to end up in an environment that is not conducive for you to live in. We are looking at expanding our on-campus residences and off-campus accommodation” in order to reduce infrastructure backlogs; especially at Welkom Campus.

When addressing students, the two SRC Presidents, Mr Ntonyane, and Phakamile Zangwa spoke about the importance of transformation within the institution and the challenges facing students in general.  They pledged to work with all stakeholders including management in resolving issues that impact students on these two campuses.
