The Central University of Technology (CUT), Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, and South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE) are embarking on a unique collaboration. They are not only providing robotics workshops and mentorship to primary and secondary schools in the Free State but also selecting ten learners from Tlotlanang Combined School in Thaba Nchu and Setjhaba-se-Maketse High School in Botshabelo to participate in the project in 2024. This initiative aims to revolutionise the way STEM robotics is taught and learned in the Free State.

Under the guidance of Mr Lucky Mokalusi, Chairperson of SAIEE Free State Center and workshop facilitator, Tlotlanang Combined School learners took part in a three-day robotics workshop on Saturdays.

The mentorship programme is not just a theoretical exercise. It is a practical training that will equip the learners with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their scientific research projects. Mr. Nicho Swartz, the Provincial Coordinator of Eskom Expo, explains that the goal of the mentorship is to guide and support the learners as they undertake scientific research projects, preparing them for the Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair in August 2024 at CUT.

“In this case, the learners must design a prototype for their research projects, which they will showcase at the scientific fair. Therefore, this ongoing mentoring will help them gain confidence and a deeper understanding of product development using Laser Cutting and 3D printing. This practice will expose them to global standards unavailable in the Free State. This will also encourage them to participate in the World Robot Olympiad, First LEGO League, Virtual Gear Competition, and First Tech Challenge,” he added.

CUT students are enlisted to assist and guide the learners throughout this endeavour. In doing so, they get the chance to promote community engagement, one of the CUT graduate attributes.
