CUT enhances regional excellence through International Academic Moderation
Prof. Parks Makhoahle, Senior Lecturer and Professor of Biomedical Technology, served as an external moderator at the National Health Training College, helping ensure that graduates entering South African institutions are equipped with the required competencies and academic depth. His role safeguards the integrity of qualifications while enhancing student mobility and professional readiness across the region.
The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) extended its academic footprint beyond South Africa, when Prof. Parks Makhoahle served as an external moderator at the National Health Training College. The moderation covered multiple modules from first- to third-year levels, reinforcing academic quality and alignment across borders. This strategic engagement highlights CUT’s growing influence within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), with a particular focus on Lesotho, South Africa’s uniquely positioned neighbour. Through such collaborations, CUT continues to play a pivotal role in strengthening regional higher education systems and fostering cross-border academic excellence.
The National Health Training College has historically served as a feeder into South Africa’s Biomedical qualifications (B-Tech, M-Tech and D-Tech), and this moderation ensures that its curriculum, assessment standards, and learning outcomes remain aligned with South African benchmarks. This is especially critical for students seeking recognition through the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), enabling them to seamlessly pursue further studies in South Africa, including qualifications in Medical Laboratory Science. Importantly, this prestigious moderation appointment spans a period of two years, with the option of renewal for an additional year. This reflects sustained confidence in CUT’s academic leadership and its commitment to maintaining high standards of teaching, learning, and assessment across the region.
In his remarks, Prof. Parks Makhoahle said, “by actively contributing to international module moderation, CUT ensures that graduates entering South African institutions are equipped with the required competencies and academic depth. This not only safeguards the integrity of qualifications but also enhances student mobility and professional readiness across the region,” he said.
Through initiatives like these, CUT continues to position itself as a leader in advancing quality education, driving regional integration, and shaping the future of health sciences in Southern Africa.
