CUT and NEMISA empower learners through Digital Literacy Training at Welkom Campus
High school learners engage in hands-on digital literacy training during the four-day programme at Welkom campus.
The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) and the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (NEMISA) joined forces to host a four-day Digital Literacy training programme at Welkom Campus. The programme, which concluded with a certificate ceremony on 11 July 2025, was a testament to the power of collaboration in advancing digital literacy.
This initiative, tailored for high school learners, particularly those from schools with limited access to Information Technology infrastructure, has had a profound impact. Through this hands-on training, learners were introduced to basic computer skills, aligning with the Digital Literacy programme offered by NEMISA and supported by CUT, which paved the way for their digital literacy development.
The project forms part of CUT’s broader community engagement strategy to empower young people with future-ready skills. It also speaks directly to the University’s vision of shaping capable graduates who are not only academically prepared but also digitally fluent.
“This programme is deliberately delivered to upskill the kind of students CUT attracts, computer-literate, confident, and ready to take on further studies in a rapidly advancing digital environment,” said Mr Lucky Mkabane.
The certificates awarded on the final day were more than just pieces of paper. They symbolised the progress and potential of the learners. For many, this was their first formal exposure to digital learning, marking a significant step towards academic and career readiness.
Through initiatives like this, CUT is not just a university, but a catalyst for change. It continues to play an active role in transforming communities and expanding access to quality, future-oriented education.

Celebrating their achievements, learners were awarded certificates after completing the Digital Literacy programme, facilitated by CUT and NEMISA.
