CUT Welkom Campus graduation joy and reflection: A celebration of hard work and resilience
Proud moments for the Tsewana and Mokhako family: Siphiwo Vincent Tsewana celebrates his graduation with his greatest supporters, his grandmother, Ms Josephine Mokhako and brother, Mr Lehlohonolo Tsewana, who stood by him through every challenge.
It is the dawn of a new era and a moment of pride, emotion, and reflection for Siphiwo Vincent Tsewana who graduated with his Bachelor of Education Honours in Education Management.
Tsewana said his graduation day is particularly special because his greatest supporters were there to witness his milestone. " Today is a big moment for me and my family. I am excited to celebrate this day alongside my grandmother and brother who have been there for me through thick and thin. My first graduation was virtual, and both my grandparents were happy to hear my name being announced. This time it is a real ceremony but sadly, my grandfather passed away last year, and he is not here to witness this beautiful day,” he shared.
Siphiwo’s journey has been one of resilience. Losing his mother in Grade 9 left him as an orphan, but his grandmother stepped in to raise him. “My grandmother’s unwavering support and wisdom became my foundation and pillar of strength. She played a motherly role to me and my brother and am grateful to her. I am here today because of her support and encouragement throughout my life journey. The lessons she instilled in me will continue to guide me beyond university. One that stands out the most is her emphasis on making decisions that leads to positive consequences. She always said that If I mess up, I should start all over again and not give up,” Siphiwo explained.

Nthabeleng Sekomere embraces the joy of graduation, a testament to her dedication and hard work.
Another graduate, Nthabeleng Sekomere, also reflected on the challenges she faced while studying for her Bachelor of Education Honours in Education Management. She said that striking a balance between work and her studies was overwhelming at times. "I almost went through depression again," she said, recalling the difficulties she faced, especially when CUT transitioned from semester exams to year-end exams.
Nthabeleng, is a proud member of the Zion Christian Church Student Forum (ZCCSF), an organisation where she found support and a sense of belonging within the university community. “The university has several recognised student organisations where students can find solace. Being a member of the ZCCSF was the best decision for me. When the going got tough, they were there for me, they are like family away from home. They made me feel recognised and accepted.”
She added that a graduation ceremony is more than just receiving a certificate. “Graduation is not just about walking the isle and receiving a qualification, it is a culmination of sacrifices, determination, and support from those who stood beside us,” she said.
For Siphiwo and Nthabeleng, this day marks not just the end of one journey, but the beginning of another chapter, shaped by the values and resilience that carried them through.
