Changes to access Wi-Fi at CUT Campuses

We are improving Wi-Fi infrastructure at our campuses. The replacement will improve and make changes to how we connect.

What do you need to know to connect?

  1. CUT employees and students will now connect to Wi-Fi using “Eduroam”. Use your full credential, i.e. e-mail address: jdoe@cut.ac.za or 21900000@stud.cut.ac.za, not just username.
  2. Visitors from other Universities will connect to Wi-Fi using “Eduroam” Use your full credentials, e.g. jdoe@ufs.ac.za.
  3. “Guest” is available for visitors to the campuses who are not part of our community. Access should be requested from ICT and Computer Services team.

What will be removed?

“Central University of Technology”, “Staff“ and “Students” will be removed as Wi-Fi connection network options on 09 October 2020.

Steps to connect to CUT’s Wi-Fi

  • On the Wi-Fi toolbar, locate “eduroam” SSID
  • Enter CUT credentials, e.g. employees: username@cut.ac.za and students: studentnumber@stud.cut.ac.za
  • Phase 2 authentication select : MSCHAPv2
  • CA Certificate: Do not validate
  • You are connected

What is eduroam?

eduroam (education roaming) is a secure, world-wide roaming access service developed by the international research and education community. It allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions to obtain wireless access and Internet connectivity at participating service providers simply, securely, and free-of-charge.

eduroam was launched in South Africa in 2012 and it is now utilised by over 30 universities and research institutions across the country. There are more than 800,000 higher education students in South Africa who can make use of eduroam, and this number is set to grow as eduroam is being introduced into TVET colleges. Roaming is available in over a hundred countries worldwide, a growing number of which are in Africa.

Benefits of implementing eduroam on CUT wireless networks

Benefits to students

The national White Paper for Post-School Education and Training1 recognises that access to ICTs is now “an indispensable infrastructural component for effective education provision” with many critical learning materials only available online. Deploying eduroam on CUT wireless infrastructure significantly increases its awareness, allowing more students to be reached closer to their homes using other institutions eduroam connection. This appreciably improves the experience of university students – particularly those living in poorer communities, many of whom must travel considerable distances to their places of learning. By introducing eduroam to our students, we bring connectivity closer to them as they make use of eduroam infrastructure across the country and the globe. We realise the dual benefit of improving their productivity (and their ultimate goal of obtaining a qualification and becoming a productive citizen) and reducing the burdens of high data costs and transport.

In addition, should South Africa see a resurgence of the disruptions we’ve seen over the last few years, increased eduroam coverage extends the options available to those students who wish to continue with their studies.
