Professor Muthoni Masinde is the Dean of the faculty and a Professor of Information Technology.
Prof. Muthoni Masinde is a prominent researcher in computer science, recognised with a C2 rating from South Africa’s National Research Foundation (NRF). She serves as the Dean for the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment, and Information Technology (FEBIT) at the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT). Prof. Masinde is the founder of ITIKI (Information Technology and Indigenous Knowledge with Intelligence), a platform that has made a profound impact on small-scale farmers by integrating indigenous and scientific weather data using advanced technologies such as artificial neural networks and wireless sensor networks.
With more than 100 scientific publications and substantial experience in supervising postgraduate research, Prof. Masinde’s work has received national and international acclaim. Her accolades include the 2016 Distinguished Young Woman Scientist award from South Africa’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) and significant funding from USAID’s Securing Water for Food initiative. Her expertise is frequently sought after, leading to keynote addresses and seminars at global conferences and her work being featured on major media platforms like eNCA, CNN, Voice of America, and the BBC World Service. She has also presented a TED Talk.
In addition to her academic and research achievements, Prof. Masinde has over 25 years of experience in the ICT sector. She has led projects such as the development of an ICT Strategy and Implementation Plan for a multinational manufacturing firm, a USAID-funded electronic notification system for trans-border trade in East Africa, and a drought prediction system for Kenya, Mozambique, and South Africa.
Prof. Masinde holds a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Nairobi, an MSc from the Free University of Brussels, and a PhD from the University of Cape Town. She recently completed an MBA from the University of the Free State to further develop her business management skills in leading ITIKI.
