QUALIFICATIONSPhD (Philosophy), DTh (Dogmatics), PhD (Community Health), SA.
PORTFOLIOProf Lategan’s research focuses on inequality in (South African) healthcare, particularly the influence of social determinants on elderly people. The role of social determinants in health is grounded in the World Health Organization’s definition of social determinants, namely as the “conditions in which people are born, grown, work, live, age and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life” (2024, https://www.who.int/health-topics/social-determinants-of-health). The negative impact of social determinants contributes to the vulnerability of elderly people.

His research focuses on four aspects of elderly care, namely:
  • Which social determinants contribute to the vulnerability of elderly people?
  • What are the ethical consequences of the social determinants on the elderly community?
  • How can these social determinants be addressed?
  • What are the end-of-life challenges of the elderly community?
