The aim of the Quality Enhancement Project (QEP) is to improve student success both at individual higher education institutions (HEIs) and in the higher education sector as a whole. For this reason, it is being implemented at all universities in South Africa.
The goals of the QEP are:
- Improving the quality of undergraduate educational provision.
- Improving the number of quality graduates.
- Developing a higher education system that is improving continuously as members of the higher education community collaborate to share good practices and solve shared problems.
The four focus areas of the QEP are:
Enhancing academics as teachers
- including professional development, reward and recognition, workload, conditions of service, and performance appraisal.
Enhancing student support and development
- including career and curriculum advising, life and academic skills development, counselling, student performance monitoring, and referral.
Enhancing the learning environment
- including teaching and learning spaces, ICT infrastructure and access, technology-enabled tools and resources, and library facilities; and
Enhancing course and programme enrolment management
- including admissions, selection, placement, re-admission refusal, pass rates in gateway courses, throughput rates, and management information systems.
Four task teams have been constituted and approved by Senate to commence with a submission to the Council on Higher Education (CHE) South Africa; which is tabled for September 2014.
