Finding a job is a real challenge, but taking a number of different approaches in an effective way will increase your chances of success. Use as many different resources as possible, not just one or two.

  • The job advertisements published in newspapers are useful starting points on which to base your search.
  • It is a good idea to research the current requirements of employers, as well as trends and developments in the job market.

  • Start by searching the internet using keywords related to the type of job you have in mind.
  • Visit the websites of relevant professional associations in your field.
  • Recruitment agencies are useful additional resources in your search for employment, but your cover letter and CV will have to stand out in order to be effective.
  • Be very specific about the type of job you are seeking.
  • Contact the agency regularly to ensure that they keep you in mind for any suitable positions.
  • Having identified relevant employers, you could simply send off your CV in hopes that they have a position available.
  • There is always a chance that a speculative application will result in employment.
  • If you are interested in working for a particular company, request an informal meeting with them in order to gather information and seek advice – not to ask for a job.
  • Volunteering is one of the best ways of developing one’s skills.
  • You could start doing volunteer jobs from your first year of university onwards.
  • Volunteering allows you to test out the sector, make valuable contacts, and gain useful background knowledge.
  • The Careers Office is a valuable resource when looking to enter the world of work.
  • This office offers career development training, interview preparation, workshops, career fairs, company presentations, on-campus work, and so much more.
  • Services are offered free of charge to enrolled students.
  • Word-of-mouth is the most effective means of finding employment.
  • The aim is to develop and maintain relationships with the purpose of finding job opportunities.
  • Up to 80% of job openings are not advertised.
  • The key to unlocking these hidden employment opportunities is to make yourself known to potential employers.
  • Many people who have interned or volunteered at a particular company end up finding permanent employment there.
  • Although some internships and long-term volunteer positions come with some form of remuneration, the most important thing is that they allow you to gain experience and give you the chance to meet potential employers and make valuable networking contacts.
