CUT’s 20-year journey through the eyes of alumna Mags Shivanda
Proud CUT alumna: Mags Shivanda, founder and CEO of DigitalShero Media Group
As the Central University of Technology (CUT) celebrates its 20th anniversary, we take this moment not only to celebrate but also to reflect on the remarkable journey experienced by its alumni. Among the many voices that have witnessed and contributed to this transformation journey is Mags Shivanda, a distinguished alumna whose career embodies the spirit of innovation and empowerment fostered at CUT. The university’s evolution and the success of its many alumni like Shivanda stand as a testament to the enduring legacy of excellence and empowerment that CUT continues to uphold.
Mags Shivanda joined CUT at a pivotal moment in its history. “I joined CUT when it was still known as a Technikon. Being part of the transition to a University of Technology was an exhilarating experience. I was in my second year of study when the change happened, and it was thrilling to see our institution gain a university status. It elevated our educational experience and opened new opportunities for recognition and growth,” she recalls.
Shivanda’s journey at CUT laid the foundation for her career in digital marketing. With over 13 years of experience, she has become an influential figure in the industry. “I am the founder and CEO of DigitalShero Media Group, an award-winning, proudly South African digital marketing, and media solutions-driven group. We have teams in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, and Nairobi, Kenya. Our mission is to provide innovative and effective digital marketing solutions,” she explains.
In 2007, Shivanda began her career as an intern at one of South Africa’s largest media houses. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to establish DigitalShero in 2015, a company that is not only a testament to her expertise but also a beacon of empowerment in the industry. DigitalShero is a 100% Black female-owned #ADTECH media and digital marketing company.
Her commitment to community development extends beyond her professional endeavors. As the founder of the BloemGirlsRock Foundation (BGR), an NPO based in Bloemfontein, she is dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of young individuals in the Free State. “I am a cheerleader for the greater good and firmly believe in empowering our youth. We ensure that young individuals in our community have the resources they need to grow into the best versions of themselves.”
Reflecting on her time at CUT, Shivanda emphasised the importance of the institution in shaping her career and values. “I am a proud CUT alumna. The university played a crucial role in my development, providing me with the knowledge and skills to succeed in the competitive world of digital marketing. CUT instilled in me a sense of pride and a commitment to excellence that I carry with me in everything I do.”
Her message to current students is one of encouragement and inspiration. “I want to encourage all students to be proud of their institution and uphold the name of the university high. The experiences and education you receive here are invaluable. I am who and what I am today because of this institution. I also wish CUT a happy 20th anniversary. May it continue to grow into a reputable university it has become, and may it continue to instil the culture of innovation and entrepreneurship on our future leaders.”
