The Central University of Technology (CUT) and Bethlehem Voortrekker High School (BVHS) have officially launched the highly anticipated U/16 Hockey Challenger Cup 2025, a significant event in the youth sports calendar, held from 2 to 5 April 2025.
With some of the country’s top schools competing and a prize of R30,000 awaiting the winning team, the tournament promises high-level youth hockey, fiercely contested matches, and vibrant community engagement.
The tournament is more than just an athletic excellence contest; it’s a platform to showcase the values of inclusivity, opportunity, and growth.
When addressing the educators, learners, and parents, Mr. Matome Kganakga, Deputy Director: Brand and Marketing, shared a powerful message of belonging and diversity, stating “CUT is more than just a university, it is a home for all who live in it regardless of race, gender, or background.” He also highlighted the university’s commitment to an enabling language-rich environment that promotes multilingualism in institutional and day-to-day practices.
Representing the host school, BVHS Alumnus Japie Van Wyk, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the partnership. He said “as Bethlehem Voortrekker High School, we are truly grateful for this opportunity to partner with CUT. This tournament has brought top hockey players to our grounds and created a platform for young athletes to grow, connect, and showcase their talent. We thank CUT for believing in our vision and look forward to our joint future events that will continue to inspire and uplift our learners and community.”
The tournament featured a well-structured format, with pool stages and knockout playoffs. Spectators witnessed exciting clashes between top teams such as Dr Malan, Oranje, Ligbron, Waterkloof, and Monument. The event has also enjoyed strong community and corporate support, with CUT proudly acknowledged as the tournament's primary sponsor. Brands such as Grays, Spur, BethNet, Panarottis, and CN Lourens Slaghuis joined as sponsors, further elevating the tournament’s prestige.
As hockey sticks clap and school pride shines through, the CUT & BVHS U/16 Hockey Challenger Cup 2025 stands out as more than just a competition. It celebrates youth potential, a unique display of unity through sport, and a glimpse into the future of South Africa’s sporting talent.
