CUT 4th-year Radiography student receives the 2024 Abe Bailey Travel Bursary

A fourth-year Radiography: Diagnostics student, Ms Abigail van den Berg, received the prestigious 2024 Abe Bailey Travel Bursary and is scheduled to travel at the end of November 2024.
Abigail will participate in this three-week programme, which includes a tour of the United Kingdom, engagement with influential leaders, and other activities designed to broaden their understanding of global issues and leadership.
Asked about her expectations on this scholarship, Abigail said “I feel honoured to be part of this programme and I expect to learn as much as I can and use the experience gained to broaden my horizons. I am also excited to meet new like minds and make long-lasting global connections. I would like to acknowledge everyone who supported and guided me throughout this entire application process, and I wish to see more of our deserving students participating in these kinds of highly competitive global opportunities,” she said.
This marks a significant achievement for CUT since the last recipient in 2018. The objective of the Abe Bailey Travel Scholarship is to broaden the views of young South Africans, expose them to the globalised world and equip them with exceptional leadership qualities. Annually, these awards are given to academically deserving students who show qualities of leadership and service to others, and have a good track record, not only in their academics but also in a wider social context. It also encourages recipients to engage with diverse cultures and ideas, enhancing their global perspectives and leadership capabilities.
“This achievement is a testament to her dedication, academic excellence, and leadership potential. We are incredibly proud to have her represent CUT and South Africa on this prestigious international platform. This award not only highlights Abe’s remarkable accomplishments but also serves as an inspiration to all students at CUT to strive for excellence and pursue opportunities for growth, leadership, and service. We encourage all CUT students to actively participate in these kinds of scholarships as we at CUT, believe in fostering our students to become global leaders who will make a positive impact in the world. We are also very happy because this is the first since 2018 that our student was awarded this grant,” said Ms Martina Moss, Deputy Director: Academic Student and Staff Mobility.
