CUT launches CUTting Talks podcast in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of International Mother Tongue Day

CUT Language Services Unit (LSU) launched its inaugural CUTting Talks podcast in commemoration of International Mother Language Day. This year marks the 25th anniversary of dedicated efforts to preserve linguistic diversity and promote the use of mother tongues. The podcast served as a testament to the university's proactive approach to promoting linguistic diversity and inclusivity within its academic community and beyond.

Hosted by Dr Lehlohonolo Motake, Deputy Director: LSU, the podcast featured insightful discussions by a panel of speakers including Dr Sally Dzingwa, Institutional Registrar, Mr Mohau Manyarela, Deputy Director: Disability Unit, and Ms Lorraine Louw, Lecturer: Communication Sciences, who explored critical themes such as the importance of mother language education, the promotion of multilingualism as well as fostering inclusivity and accessibility within academic settings.

The initiative further highlighted CUT's dedication to contributing to a more peaceful and sustainable society through the celebration and preservation of linguistic heritage and respect for linguistic diversity.

In her comments, Dr Dzingwa spoke about the university’s policy imperatives and the enabling and supportive governance structures regarding the promotion of multilingualism. She stated that for the university to succeed, society must be the primary ambassadors of multilingualism in their homes to enable the university’s policies to be functional in promoting multilingualism.

Mr Mohau Manyarela, advocating for the CUT community with disabilities, highlighted the need for an accommodative and accessible environment for all. "Our university environment is disabled for students and staff who might prefer or have to use resources that are different from what is termed normal, such as those who use SASL (South African Sign Language).

Ms Louw emphasised the importance of strengthening collaborations between the different departments of education to solidify initiatives aimed at building a strong foundation for the sustained future use of African languages. She noted the signing of the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill as a path paving action that further indicates South Africa’s preparedness to develop, promote and use African languages in education.

The LSU’s initiative underscores the university's dedication to renewing its commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage, improving educational outcomes, and contributing to a more peaceful and sustainable society.

Proclaimed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1999, commemoration of this day by the global community is a way to raise awareness on the importance of mother tongue use, cultural diversity and multilingualism. It also serves as a significant opportunity to reflect on the achievements, renewed commitments, and emphasise the critical role of language preservation in safeguarding cultural heritage, improving education outcomes and creating more peaceful, and sustainable societies.
