The relation between Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), research, and community engagement components of a university is key in conceptualising and developing a transformative quality of teaching and learning in higher education in the contexts of decolonisation environment. Significantly, SoTL in higher education is often conceptualised as distinct from teaching and learning component, and from research component of a university. The proposed Theme for the 4th 2018 Annual SoTL conference at CUT is ‘Transforming teaching and learning through a culture of research in higher education’. Some of the issues of the Theme include: the growing interest to central SoTL as a strategy to promote research-based quality teaching and learning of transformative universities, SoTL in global, national and local contexts of higher education, students contexts, advancing teaching-research nexus through SoTL,  SoTL for student success; transformative teaching and learning in the decolonised contexts; how research into one’s teaching and learning through SoTL could enrich quality teaching and learning in different contexts.

The aim of this conference is to generate debate, theorise policy and practice, and explore opportunities and challenges associated with teaching and learning in Higher Education. This conference presents such an opportunity, as it will enable delegates and presenters to explore scholarly work in an open and collegial arena.

  • Bridging the teaching and research nexus in higher education through SoTL
  • Researching teaching for improved learning and student success
  • Using evidence-based teaching and learning to improve practice
  • Teaching and learning in a decolonised environment
  • Researching the use of technologies in teaching and learning

Papers are invited on SoTL on any of the identified subthemes.  Papers may be of empirical, theoretical, or philosophical nature on any of the subthemes.
