CUT Management wishes to congratulate one of its illustrious alumni, Dr David Mohale, on having been appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa to serve on the Municipal Demarcation Board. Dr Mohale, who is currently the Director:  Special Projects in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor and Principal at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), is one of the youngest people to be appointed to this board.

Dr Mohale obtained the BA Degree cum laude from the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) in 2006, and was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Best Academic Performance Award. Considering that he also served as Chairperson of the South African Students Congress (SASCO) in the Free State, and the university’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) President at the time, this is a significant achievement, as, in addition to their academic workload, SRC Presidents have to serve on Council, Senate, the Institutional Forum (IF) and several other university structures.

Whilst studying, he was the Free State Correspondent for the Cape Town-based soccer tabloid, Laduma.

Since leaving CUT, he continued to invest in his empowerment, amongst others obtaining a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), and a PhD in Development Studies from the University of South Africa. He further holds various certificates in leadership, local government planning, processes, systems and structures, and is a published author.

He served in the Provincial Executive Committee of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) and the Young Communist League, and was appointed as the Spokesperson of the ANCYL in the Free State. He played a prominent role in placing the policy agenda of the organisation in the public domain, and carried out this responsibility at the time the ANCYL introduced a debate on “economic freedom in our lifetime”, which, amongst others, centred around the nationalisation of mines.

Dr Mohale was employed in local government for more than a decade, where, having fulfilled numerous roles, he became acquainted with, and seasoned in local governance. He also had a short stint as Assistant Lecturer in the English Department at the CUT Welkom Campus.

He has been the spokesperson of the ANC in the Lejweleputswa District since 2012. In 2007, he was elected as the Deputy-President of the CUT Convocation at the university’s annual general alumni meeting, and is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the CUT Alumni Association.

 Dr Mohale is an ardent reader and a former newspaper columnist. In addition, he was a participant in the CUT-LEAD Development Programmes. Furthermore, he spends time working with young people on their leadership development. Amongst others, he has worked with the District Department of Basic Education, serving as motivational speaker for

Grade 12’s and teachers. A development enthusiast, he is currently a participant in the Black Management Forum (BMF)’s Young Professionals Development Programme.
