Programme-Specific Requirements

Minimum Qualification

A National Senior Certificate (NSC) or an equivalent qualification.

Required Subjects & Pass Levels

  • English: Minimum 50% (Level 4) – proficiency in written and spoken English is essential.
  • CUT Scoring Scale (APS): Minimum 27 points
  • Recommended Subjects: Consumer Science, Hospitality Studies, Accounting, or Business Studies.

Understanding Your Matric Pass Level

To help you understand your eligibility, here is a quick guide to the National Senior Certificate (NSC) pass levels. This programme requires a Diploma Pass.

Diploma Pass (Required)

Pass 6 of 7 subjects. Four subjects must be at least 40% (Level 3), including Home Language (40%). Language of Learning and Teaching (LOLT) must be at least 30%. You may fail one subject. This allows enrolment for a diploma course at a university of technology.

Bachelor’s Pass

Pass 6 of 7 subjects. Four subjects must be at least 50% (Level 4), including Home Language (40%). LOLT must be at least 30%. You may fail one subject. This allows application for a degree course.

Certificate Pass

Pass 6 of 7 subjects. Two subjects above 40%, four subjects above 30%, including Home Language (40%). You may fail one subject. This allows study for a higher certificate.


Selection Process & Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP)

Mainstream Selection Process

In consideration of the demanding nature of the hospitality industry, the Hotel School follows a strict selection process. Applicants with a CUT score of 27 or more are required to attend a selection test and interview at the Hotel School in Bloemfontein.

Applicants are assessed on versatility, willpower, determination, social skills, ability to work independently, and enthusiasm for a career in Hospitality Management. Previous and current involvement in the industry will be to the candidate’s advantage.

NCV Applicants: Applicants in possession of a National Certificate Vocational (NCV) will be evaluated according to the specific selection requirements approved by Senate.

Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP) Option

If you are a First-Time Entering (FTE) student and narrowly miss the mainstream requirements, you may be considered for the ECP stream (offered over 4 years) if you meet the following:

  • You achieved a CUT scoring scale (APS) of 23 to 26.
  • You achieved a minimum of 50% in English at Grade 12 level.

Strict ECP Regulations:

  • A student must pass all Semester 1 first-year modules to continue with Semester 2 modules.
  • A student must pass all first-year modules to continue with second-year modules.
  • A student may not change from the ECP to the regular programme.
  • A student will not be allowed to repeat the first year or part of the first year of the ECP.
