Programme-Specific Requirements

Minimum Prior Qualification

An appropriate Bachelor’s Degree (BTech, BEngTech, BSc, or equivalent) or Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from an ECSA-accredited programme in South Africa.

International applicants: A 3-year (minimum) Mechanical Engineering degree from a university recognised within the Washington, Sydney, and/or Dublin Accords may also be considered.

Required Academic Performance

  • A minimum overall average of 60% in the prerequisite Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma.
  • A minimum average of 60% specifically in the final year of that NQF Level 7 programme.

Programme Regulations & Structure

  • Selection Process: Admission to this learning programme is subject to selection.
  • Duration & Intake: A one-year, full-time programme with only one intake per year, in January. The qualification comprises 144 SAQA credits.
  • Curriculum Structure: All instructional offerings are compulsory, consisting of eight (8) subject modules plus a Research Project. Semester 1 subjects must be completed before Semester 2 subjects. Semester 1 of the Research Project must be passed successfully prior to continuing to Semester 2, with first-semester knowledge integrated into the final research output.
  • ECSA Graduate Attributes: Students must achieve competency in all 11 ECSA Graduate Attributes before they will be allowed to graduate.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Policy

  • In cases where a candidate does not meet the 60% average requirement, RPL may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Please note that RPL, in combination with the stipulated criteria, grants admission only and does not provide exemption from individual subject modules.
  • Selection will be conducted on an individual basis in accordance with the CUT RPL Policy.
