Programme-Specific Requirements

Minimum Prior Qualification

An appropriate Bachelor’s Degree (BEngTech or BSc) or Advanced Diploma in Civil Engineering (or equivalent discipline) at NQF Level 7 from an ECSA-accredited programme in South Africa.

International applicants: A SAQA-approved 3-year (minimum) degree in Civil Engineering from a university recognised within the Washington and/or Sydney Accords may also be considered.

Required Academic Performance

  • A minimum overall average of 60% in the prerequisite NQF Level 7 degree or advanced diploma.
  • A minimum average of 60% specifically in the final year of that NQF Level 7 programme.

Programme Regulations & Structure

  • Duration & Intake: A one-year, full-time programme with only one intake per year, in January. The qualification comprises 144 SAQA credits.
  • Curriculum Structure: All instructional offerings are compulsory, consisting of four (4) subject groups plus a Research Project. Semester 1 subjects must be completed before Semester 2 subjects. Semester 1 of the Research Project must be passed successfully prior to continuing to Semester 2, with first-semester knowledge integrated into the final research output.
  • ECSA Graduate Attributes: Students must achieve competency in all ECSA Graduate Attributes before they will be allowed to graduate.
  • Professional Registration Pathway: Upon successful graduation, students meet the academic requirements for registration with ECSA as a Candidate Engineering Technologist.

Specialisation Prerequisites & RPL Policy

  • Specialisation Alignment: As prior NQF Level 7 programmes contain fields of specialisation, all applications are considered individually based on the completion of appropriate NQF Level 7 subjects in one or more of the following fields: (i) Geotechnical, (ii) Structures, (iii) Transportation, (iv) Urban, and (v) Water.
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): In cases where a candidate does not meet the 60% average requirement, RPL may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Please note that RPL, in combination with the stipulated criteria, grants admission only and does not provide exemption from individual subjects. Selection will be conducted in accordance with the CUT RPL Policy.
