Higher Certificate in Renewable Energy Technologies

Career Opportunities & Professional Pathways

The Higher Certificate in Renewable Energy Technologies (HC: RET) is designed to produce innovative, visionary graduates capable of functioning within the modern technological environment and contributing to South Africa's socio-economic development. The main purpose of this qualification is to position learners academically to obtain employment, or add value to current employment, as installation and maintenance providers in the renewable energy sector. Alternatively, it strengthens an insufficient academic profile for entry into an advanced Diploma. Graduates will be competent and responsible auxiliaries, fully equipped to assist technologists and engineers in the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of RET systems. Career pathways include:

  • Renewable Energy Installation & Maintenance: RET Installation Technician, Solar Power Assistant, and Wind Energy Maintenance Auxiliary, applying practical skills in Electrical Installation and Practice, Solar Energy Systems, and Small-wind Generation.
  • Technical Support & Commissioning: Renewable Energy Systems Assistant and Commissioning Support Technician, working alongside technologists and engineers to ensure the safe and efficient deployment of power generation and storage systems.
  • Health, Safety & Compliance: RET Health and Safety Assistant, ensuring all installation and maintenance practices strictly adhere to the Principles and Practice of Health and Safety in the energy sector.
  • Academic Progression: A direct pathway to advanced Diplomas in Engineering Technology (Electrical or Mechanical), strengthening the learner's academic profile for future professional registration as an Engineering Technician or Technologist with ECSA.
