This advanced qualification prepares graduates for senior public sector positions across the political and administrative milieu, including national, regional, and local government. Owing to the wide variety of duties and activities in the public sector, public functionaries are employed at institutions throughout the country. Career pathways include:

  • Public Administration & General Management: Public Administrators, General Managers, and Public Accountability Officers, utilising foundational knowledge from Strategic Public Administration and Management and Public Accountability to oversee departmental performance, ensure ethical governance, and drive strategic public service delivery.
  • Public Human Resources & Policy Management: Strategic Public HR Managers and Policy Analysts, applying practical expertise in Strategic Public Human Resource Management and Public Policy Management to align public sector talent with organisational goals and develop impactful government policies.
  • Governmental Relations & Political Advisory: Government Relations Officers and Political Advisors, leveraging specialised skills in Governmental Relations to navigate the political milieu, facilitate intergovernmental cooperation, and manage stakeholder engagement across national, regional, and local spheres.

Programme-Specific Requirements

Minimum Prior Qualification

A National Diploma in Public Management, or an equivalent M+3 (NQF Level 6) qualification with appropriate instructional offerings.

Required Academic Performance

  • A minimum of 55% achieved in all major subjects at the third-year level of the preceding qualification.

Programme Regulations & Modes of Study

  • Location & Mode of Study: Offered in Bloemfontein via face-to-face classes. Please note that all classes are presented in the evening only.
  • Duration: 1 year (available on both a full-time and part-time basis). Full-time students must enrol as such.
  • Curriculum: All six prescribed instructional offerings are compulsory.
  • Equivalent Qualifications & RPL: Due to limited capacity, applicants with equivalent qualifications must have at least two years’ working experience in the public sector. Admission for these candidates is strictly limited to 10% of the annual intake, requires an interview, and completion of a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) template. Preference is given to candidates in managerial or supervisory positions. (Apply early, as the RPL process is time-consuming).
