Winter School improve learner performance in Free State
CUT in partnership with Standard Bank, South Africa and Department of Education in the Free State, commenced the winter school in earnest on Monday, 29 June 2015 as a statement of support towards Grade 12 learners to better their understanding of their subject content and prepare them for the final grade 12 examinations.

For the next two weeks, about 1 200 of these learners will undergo a rigorous winter school programme to better understand their subject contents and prepare them for the final grade examinations in the following subjects: Economics, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Business Studies, Geography, Accounting, Physical Science, Computer Application and Technology (CAT), Engineering Graphics and Design. “This winter school programme is of great assistance with the success rate of grade 12 results in the province.  From our side as Standard bank, we would like to see the Free State Province again taking the number one spot, and it is through hard work, dedication and commitment of our grade 12 learners, teachers and department that the province can achieve the number one position again”, said Mr Anton Nicolaisen, Regional Head of Business Banking. He further said that Standard Bank, South Africa, which is an important partner to this project, is proud to be associated with CUT and Education Department. The Bank has once again invested about R 1 million in this project to help prepare grade 12 learners with their studies and to support government to achieve better results for the province. “What the province has achieved in education over the years would not have been possible without the keen interest and dedicated support from Standard Bank. We look forward to continued collaboration with Standard Bank and Department of Education”, said Prof. Henk de Jager, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic and Research at CUT.

He stated that there was still room for more collaboration with districts beyond the confines of Motheo; more particularly with the geographical area where CUT Welkom Campus is located. Learners were urged to spend more time reading their books and preparing themselves for the future and that their good results will ensure continuing support for education of young people in the region. “As the department, we will continue to support CUT and its intervention programmes in pursuit of our common mandate of delivering quality education for our youth in this province”, said Mr MB Monnane, Deputy Director General responsible for District Management and Educational Support in the Department of Education, Free State. Mr Monnane urged the learners to use the next two weeks fruitfully in order to do well in the future and to enable the province to attain higher percent pass rate and improve its 2014 pass rate of 82.8 percent.
