Two CUT graduates turn their disability into achievement

Happy moments for Mojela Isaac Vena who received his qualification Baccalaureus Education (FET) Specialisation Technology qualification and Mbulelo Lee-John Boko who received his Baccalaureus Education (FET) Specialisation: Natural Sciences. They both travelled and experienced the same fatality when they got in accidents on different occasions that resulted in loss of mobility.

Wheelchair-bound students Mojela Isaac Vena, and Mbulelo Lee-John Boko wheeled their chairs onto the Boet Troskie Hall stage to receive their qualifications at the 2019 Autumn Graduations. The two students are a true testament that disability is not inability. The two were involved in accidents on different occasions that resulted in the loss of mobility and left them wheelchair bound.

Mbulelo Lee-John Boko said that his journey at CUT was not easy, but through patience and perseverance, he managed to pull through. He said that he came to CUT in 2012 like any other normal student and was supposed to graduate in 2017. During his final year, he was involved in a car accident that left him on a wheelchair and delayed his varsity studies. “I never lost hope because when I started, I had a goal and a million dreams. Life threw me many curve balls, but through hard work determination and patience I made it, look at me now,” he said.

An emotional moment for Mbulelo Lee-John Boko as he goes on stage to receive his Baccalaureus Education (FET) Specialisation: Natural Sciences qualification.

Mojela Isaac Vena was also involved in an accident in 2013 and lost his total mobility. He joined CUT in 2008, and due to the accident, he had to recuperate. In 2017 he decided to give it another try and finish what he’d started. “Coming back for the second time was not easy as I had to face many challenges. Moving around campus was not that difficult as most of the buildings are wheelchair friendly. The only challenge I faced was when elevators were not working. It was frustrating because I could not attend class. I am happy that I managed to finish and receive my qualification despite what I had to go through. As a person, you must not let your situation determine your destination or hinder you from achieving your dreams. It is through hard work and perseverance that I managed to pull through.”

In it to win it, Mojela Isaac Vena finally made it. Conferring Baccalaureus Education (FET) Specialisation Technology qualification is Chancellor Madam Justice Mahube Molemela.
