Think. Click. Secure: CUT empowers staff and students against cyber threats
Mr Mogotsi Galeboe, Chief Information Officer emphasising the importance of cybersecurity and digital safety among students.
As education increasingly relies on digital platforms, cloud-based systems, and online collaboration, safeguarding information and digital infrastructure has become more critical than ever. Cybersecurity is no longer optional; it is essential for protecting personal data, institutional information, and ensuring a secure learning and working environment.
In recognition of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) Information Technology Services (ITS) hosted Cybersecurity Awareness Day activities on 12 and 13 October 2026 at Bloemfontein and Welkom Campuses under the theme, “Think. Click. Secure. Be Aware | Stay Alert | Stay Secure.” The initiative aimed to equip staff and students with practical knowledge to identify cyber threats, protect sensitive information, and adopt safer online practices in an increasingly connected world.

Bloemfontein Campus students attended the 2026 Cybersecurity Awareness event, where they gained valuable insights into cyber threats, online safety, and the importance of protecting personal and institutional information.
Addressing attendees, Mr Mogotsi Galeboe, Chief Information Officer, highlighted the importance of digital safety at a time when a single device can provide access to academic resources, financial services, social media platforms, and future career opportunities.
“Your safety, privacy, studies, and future belong to you. Therefore, it is your responsibility to protect your devices and secure the accounts you use in your daily lives,” said Galeboe.
Reinforcing the message, Mr James Nengomasha, Deputy Director: ICT Governance/Cybersecurity, emphasised that cybersecurity is a collective responsibility that extends beyond the ICT Department.
“Cybersecurity is not merely an ICT responsibility; it is a shared responsibility for everyone who uses digital technology,” said Nengomasha.
Supported by industry partners Adapt IT, Gijima, ESET, Palo Alto Networks, and Vodacom, the event covered key aspects of digital security, including password security, multi-factor authentication, identity theft, artificial intelligence, digital footprints, device protection, and cloud security.
Through this initiative, CUT continues to strengthen a culture of cybersecurity awareness and responsible digital behaviour, empowering its university community to make informed decisions, reduce cyber risks, and contribute to a safer digital environment for all.
