Legal Services brought in-house at CUT
The newly appointed Senior Director for Legal Services at the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT), Ms Kwena Mageza is looking forward to re-building the institutions legal unit. The focus is governance.
“There hasn't been a legal unit for CUT, for a period of about 10 years. So, I am building the legal unit anew. I'm excited that I get to set the tone for my time here at CUT and for my department. You know, I am not preceding anyone, so it's not like there's going to be any comparison. I am the one who's going to decide how we take the legal unit forward,” said Mageza.
Mageza is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa, with a right of appearance. She holds an LLB degree from the University of Limpopo, and an LLM in Estate Law from the University of Pretoria. She practiced as both a defendant and plaintiff Attorney, wherein her litigation experience and knowledge were sharpened. She was responsible for preparation of summons and pleadings; preparation for court and attending pre-trials; preparation and settlement of non-litigation matters with defendants before they set down for trial.
“I'm excited about the potential that CUT has. I feel like there's a lot that the university can do in terms of development, especially in governance, because that's the bulk of what I will be considering,” she added.
She chose a career path in law, stating that she believes that she can use her voice to help others. “I know a lot of students, they'll say ‘I did law because people used to say I talk a lot’. And they think that talking a lot is a characteristic of being a lawyer. But when you practice law, you realise that you need to do more listening than talking because it’s important to hear what other people say in order for you to respond. Law chose me. I feel like God has given me a voice, and he wanted me to express that voice through the law. I have surrendered myself to his purpose for my life and for my journey, so this is just me being used as a tool.”
