Dental Assisting Programme enhances clinical teaching with state-of-the-art interactive audio-visual system

The state-of-the-art interactive audio-visual system is transforming practical training by expanding access to live clinical demonstrations and advancing technology-enhanced teaching and learning in the Dental Assisting Programme.

The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) continues to lead in technology-enhanced higher education through the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences' investment in an advanced interactive audio-visual system for its Dental Assisting Programme. The innovative technology transforms the delivery of clinical training by expanding access to practical learning, strengthening collaboration with industry, and ensuring students graduate with the digital and clinical competencies required by the modern healthcare sector.

The newly installed interactive audio-visual system significantly enhances practical teaching by enabling students to participate in live clinical demonstrations remotely when space limitations prevent them from being physically present in the clinic or skills laboratory. Through real-time streaming, students can observe procedures as they happen, ensuring uninterrupted access to authentic clinical learning experiences.

This initiative is further strengthened by the university’s commitment to digital inclusion. Every student receives an electronic device and digital learning resources upon registration, creating equitable access to teaching and learning regardless of location. The combination of digital infrastructure and innovative teaching practices allows more students to benefit from high-quality practical instruction while supporting the university's mission of producing competent, work-ready graduates.

The project reflects the collaborative efforts of the Dean of the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences, Prof. Ntsoaki Malebo, the Dental Assisting Programme, and CUT's Institutional e-Learning Department, led by Mr Stefan Ferreira and Mr Paul Victor. Their partnership demonstrates the university's commitment to integrating innovative educational technologies that enhance student success and improve the quality of teaching.

Beyond expanding student access, the system strengthens engagement with the healthcare industry by allowing lecturers to connect instantly with specialists during practical sessions. Experts can join remotely, observe live procedures, provide immediate professional input, and engage directly with lecturers and students. This real-time collaboration enriches learning by exposing students to current clinical practices and professional expertise while fostering stronger links between academia and industry.

The impact of the technology was recently demonstrated during a visit by the Office of the Dean to the Dental Assisting facilities. The delegation observed the system in operation during a live clinical session in which a student received dental treatment while classmates participated remotely. The demonstration showcased how technology can bridge the gap between theoretical instruction and hands-on clinical practice, ensuring that all students benefit from meaningful, authentic learning experiences regardless of physical space constraints.

The introduction of this advanced teaching technology highlights CUT's strategic commitment to innovation, digital transformation, and student-centred education. By integrating modern educational technologies into clinical training, the Dental Assisting Programme is creating a more accessible, interactive, and collaborative learning environment that prepares graduates to meet the evolving demands of the healthcare profession.
