CUT’s Smart Robotic Wheelchair, Motsamai, Secures Second Place at International Robotics Competition

The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT), is celebrating an international achievement after Motsamai, an innovative smart robotic wheelchair, secured second place at the 2026 IROS Volting Cup Wheelchair Dance Competition, held during the IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) in Pittsburgh, United States.

Led by Prof. Markus Elisha, Full Professor in the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering at CUT, the project demonstrates how artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and intelligent mobility technologies can address real-world challenges and improve the quality of life of people living with disabilities.

Developed as part of CUT’s Smart Wheelchair research initiative, Motsamai integrates Internet of Things (IoT) technology, remote-control functionality and intelligent navigation systems. These capabilities enable the wheelchair to detect obstacles, map its surroundings and determine its location. Beyond mobility assistance, the innovation contributes to the broader vision of smart and inclusive cities, where technology promotes accessibility, independence and meaningful participation in society. Meaning “to walk”, Motsamai demonstrates how robotics can extend beyond conventional mobility support to create opportunities for creativity, human expression and social inclusion through dance.

Under Prof. Elisha’s leadership, Morakane Mohanoe, Matsietsi Mohapi, Kesaoleboga Mabuzweni and Jessica Elisha also contributed their technical expertise, creativity and collaborative spirit to bringing Motsamai’s performance to life on the international stage.

This achievement highlights the university’s growing contribution to human-centred research and innovation. It features the potential of advanced engineering to deliver practical solutions to societal challenges while advancing accessibility and showcasing South African innovation on the global stage.
